African Safari Packing Checklist
African Safari Packing Checklist

Packing for a safari can feel overwhelming, but it’s simpler than it seems. The key is to bring versatile, lightweight clothing and a few essentials that keep you comfortable in the bush. Below you’ll find our recommended packing list for a luxury safari in Tanzania and beyond.

Clothing

  • Light, breathable shirts and trousers in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive, tan)

  • A warm fleece or sweater for early mornings and cool evenings

  • Lightweight jacket or windbreaker

  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers

  • Sandals or flip-flops for relaxing in camp

  • A wide-brimmed sun hat or cap

  • Swimwear (for lodges with pools or a beach extension in Zanzibar)

Accessories

  • Sunglasses with UV protection

  • High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm

  • Insect repellent (DEET-based recommended)

  • Lightweight scarf or buff (helpful against dust)

  • Small daypack or sling bag

Safari Gear

  • Camera with spare batteries and memory cards

  • Binoculars (high quality makes a big difference)

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Travel adapter (Type G and D plugs are common in Tanzania)

  • Small flashlight or headlamp

Personal Items

  • Prescription medications (enough for the whole trip)

  • Basic first-aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, pain relief, motion sickness tablets)

  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes

  • Travel documents: passport, visa, vaccination card, insurance, flight details

What Not to Bring

  • Hard-sided suitcases or wheeled luggage – not practical for safari vehicles or light aircraft.

  • Camouflage clothing – in many African countries this is reserved for the military.

  • Black and navy clothing – attracts heat and biting insects.

  • Bright white outfits – stand out too much in the bush.

  • Bulky electrical appliances like hairdryers, which often don’t work in remote camps.

  • Single-use plastics – Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Namibia strictly ban plastic carrier bags. Offenders risk heavy fines or penalties. Use reusable fabric bags or packing cubes instead.

Safari Packing Tip

Most internal flights in East Africa have a 15 kg (33 lbs) luggage limit in soft-sided bags. If you’re traveling with extra luggage, we can arrange safe storage in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar.
